1. WHAT IS THE MEDICINE INTENDED FOR?
Olatuton is intended for:
Treatment of people with acromegaly:
-
Whose illness is sufficiently controlled through treatment
with standard doses of subcutaneous octreotide.
-
When
surgery
or
radiotherapy
are
unsuitable
or
ineffective.
-
To cover the interim period until radiotherapy becomes
fully effective.
Treatment
of
gastro-entero-pancreatic
)GEP(
endocrine
tumors, carcinoid tumors.
THERAPEUTIC CLASS:
Somatostatin analogues.
Olatuton is a synthetic compound derived from somatostatin.
Somatostatin is normally found in the human body, where
it inhibits the release of certain hormones such as growth
hormone. Olatuton has advantages over somatostatin, it is
stronger and its effects last longer.
Acromegaly is a condition in which the
