1 PACKAGE LEAFLET: INFORMATION FOR THE USER AQUEOUS CREAM BP (HYDROUS EMULSIFYING OINTMENT) Paraffin soft white and Paraffin liquid READ ALL OF THIS LEAFLET CAREFULLY BEFORE YOU START USING THIS MEDICINE BECAUSE IT CONTAINS IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR YOU. Always use this medicine exactly as described in this leaflet or as your doctor or pharmacist has told you. - Keep this leaflet. You may need to read it again. - Ask your pharmacist if you need more information or advice. - You must contact a doctor if your symptoms worsen or do not improve. - If you get any of the side effects, talk to your doctor or pharmacist. Contents of the pack and other information 1. WHAT AQUEOUS CREAM IS AND WHAT IT IS USED FOR The name of your medicine is Aqueous Cream BP. It contains the active ingredient paraffin soft white and paraffin liquid. It is used for the relief of minor skin irritations and as a vehicle for active ingredients to be applied to the skin. 2. WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW BEFORE YOU USE AQUEOUS CREAM DO NOT USE AQUEOUS CREAM: - if you are allergic to paraffin soft white and paraffin liquid or any of the other ingredients of this medicine (listed in section 6). WARNINGS AND PRECAUTIONS Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before using Aqueous Cream. Do not smoke or go near naked flames - risk of severe burns. Fabric (clothing, bedding, dressings etc) that has been in contact with this product burns more easily and is a serious fire hazard. Washing clothing and bedding may reduce product build-up but not totally remove it. SUMMARY OF PRODUCT CHARACTERISTICS 1 NAME OF THE MEDICINAL PRODUCT Emulsifying Ointment BP. 2 QUALITATIVE AND QUANTITATIVE COMPOSITION Emulsifying Wax 30% White Soft Paraffin 50% Liquid Paraffin 20% Wax as prepared in section 6.1 3. PHARMACEUTICAL FORM Ointment 4. CLINICAL PARTICULARS 4.1. THERAPEUTIC INDICATIONS For external use only. Used to prepare Aqueous Cream BP and Buffered Cream BP. 4.2. POSOLOGY AND METHOD OF ADMINISTRATION The product is used by the pharmacist to prepare Aqueous Cream and Buffered Cream and therefore is not sold with any clinical indications or dosage schedules. 4.3. CONTRAINDICATIONS Hypersensitivity to any of the ingredients. Emulsifying ointment has been found to have major sunscreen activity in clinically normal skin. Preparations containing emulsifying ointment should not be used before phototherapy or in phototesting procedures. 4.4 SPECIAL WARNINGS AND PRECAUTIONS FOR USE For external use only. Emulsifying wax (which contains sodium lauryl sulphate and cetostearyl alcohol) may cause local skin reactions (e.g. stinging, burning, itching, redness and contact dermatitis), particularly in children with atopic eczema. The package leaflet/label should include the following information: Contains sodium lauryl sulfate which may cause local skin reactions (e.g. stinging and contact dermatitis). The risk of fire should be considered when using large quantities of any paraffin-based emollient. Emulsifying ointment in contact with dressings and clothing is easily ignited by a naked flame. The risk is greater when this preparation is applied to large areas of the body and clothing or dressings become soaked with the emollient. Patients should be told to keep away from fire or flames and not to smoke when using this preparation. This preparation may make skin and surfaces slippery – particular care is needed when bathing.
