PROPERTIES/MODE OF ACTION
Ketoprofen is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) belonging
to
the propionic acid subclass of carboxylic acid derivative NSAIDs.
Ketoprofen exerts three main pharmacological effects that are common
to
all NSAIDs: anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and antipyretic. The primary
mechanism of action is inhibition of prostaglandin synthesis through
interference with the cyclooxygenase pathway of arachidonic acid
metabolism. Ketoprofen has been shown to have potent activity against
acute and chronic inflammation in the classical models of
inflammation.
INDICATIONS
For short-term treatment (up to 5 days) of acute painful, inflammatory
conditions in dogs and cats due to osteoarthritis or musculo-skeletal
disorders (including but not limited to hip dysplasia, trauma,
dislocation,
strain, disc disease, spondylosis, panosteitis, and swelling);
symptomatic
treatment of fever and management of post-surgical pain in dogs.
Also for longer-term treatment of chronic pain in dogs due to
osteoarthritis
or musculo-skeletal disorders.
