WHAT MAXIDEX IS AND WHAT IT IS USED FOR MAXIDEX is an anti-inflammatory agent for the eye (contains dexamethasone, a corticosteroid). MAXIDEX is indicated for the treatment of inflammatory conditions of the conjunctiva, cornea, and anterior segment of the eye and in case of corneal injuries from chemical agents, radiation, thermal burns or foreign bodies, whenever corticosteroids are required and on medical advice. MAXIDEX can also be used in case of cornea transplants in order to suppress the reaction to the transplanted membrane. 2. SUMMARY OF PRODUCT CHARACTERISTICS 1. NAME OF THE MEDICINAL PRODUCT MAXIDEX 1 mg/ml eye drops, suspension. 2. QUALITATIVE AND QUANTITATIVE COMPOSITION 1 ml of suspension contains 1 mg/ml dexamethasone Excipients: 1 ml of suspension contains 0.1 mg benzalkonium chloride For a full list of excipients, see Section 6.1. 3. PHARMACEUTICAL FORM Eye drops, suspension. 4. CLINICAL PARTICULARS 4.1 THERAPEUTIC INDICATIONS Treatment of corticosteroid responsive inflammatory conditions of the palpebral and bulbar conjunctiva, cornea and anterior segment of the globe, such as: allergic conjunctivitis, keratitis as a consequence of acne rosacea, superficial punctate keratitis, iritis, cyclitis, corneal injuries from chemical products, radiation, burns or foreign bodies, when the inherent hazard of steroid use is accepted to obtain a perceptible diminution in oedema and inflammation. MAXIDEX may be used also in keratoplasty in order to suppress the reaction on the transplant. 4.2 POSOLOGY AND METHOD OF ADMINISTRATION Shake well before use. Topical application. 1 to 2 drops in the conjunctival sac. In severe inflammation, the instillations may be made hourly and subsequently at longer intervals until the treatment is discontinued as soon as the inflammation has subsided. In mild inflammation, the drops may be administered 4 to 6 times daily. The duration of the treatment varies with the type of lesion and may last from a few days to several weeks, according to the therapeutic response. Relapses, more common in chronic lesions than in clear-cut cases, usually respond well to the treatment. Do not stop the treatment prematurely.
