Cephalexin is considered a broad spectrum antibiotic, since it displays efficacy against both gram- positive and gram-negative bacteria. However, in common with the first-generation cephalosporins generally, cephalexin provides excellent coverage against most gram-positive organisms, but variable coverage against gram-negative organisms. Cephalexin is resistant to staphylococcal penicillinase, but is sensitive to B-lactamases produced by many gram- negative organisms. These details are reflected in cephalexin MIC (Minimal Inhibitory Concentration) data from in-vitro cephalexin MIC studies involving bacteria isolated from clinical cases of canine pyo- derma / dermatitis and acute cases of canine and feline urinary tract infections. Results from the MIC studies indicate that the majority of bacterial strains associated with acute canine and feline lower urinary tract infections and canine pyoderma / dermatitis are susceptible to cephalexin. As expected from a first generation cephalosporin, cephalexin shows very good eff Read the complete document
