this
procedure
may
temporarily
produce
high
concentrations
of
halothane
vapour.
In
emergency
situations,
halothane may be given by open
methods
utilizing
improvised
face-masks.

BODYWEIGHT)
_Induction:_ It is possible to induce
anaesthesia by administration of
halothane to a standing animal
using a Cox mask in a manner
similar to that traditionally used
for
chloroform,
although
this
method is normally confined to
foals and calves.
Foals, calves and sheep up to
25-30kg
are
easily
restrained
for the induction of anaesthesia
by 2-4% halothane vapoour. In
larger animals a barbiturate such
as thiopentone sodium may be
given intravenously to produce
loss
of
consciousness
before
exposure to halothane vapour.
_Maintenance:_ Provided due care
is taken to maintain a free airway,
maintenance
of
anaesthesia
with
0.5-2%
halothane
vapour
presents no special problems.
