WHAT LOSACAR IS USED FOR
The name of your medicine is
LOSACAR TABLET 50MG. It
contains
the
active
ingredient,
Losartan potassium. LOSACAR
can be used for the treatment of
hypertension
(high
blood
pressure).
LOSACAR
can
be
used
alone,
or
with
other
antihypertensive agents.
HOW LOSACAR WORKS
Losartan (LOSACAR) belongs
to a group of medicines known
as
angiotensin-II
receptor
antagonists.
Angiotensin-II
is
a
substance
produced
in
the
body
which
binds
to
receptors
in
blood
vessels, causing them to tighten
and
results
in
an
increase
in
blood pressure.
Losartan prevents the binding of
angiotensin-II to these receptors,
causing
the
blood
vessels
to
relax which in turn lowers the
blood pressure.
Losartan slows the decrease of
kidney function in patients with
high blood pressure and type II
diabetes.
BEFORE YOU TAKE LOSACAR

Do not take this medicine:

If you are allergic to Losartan
or to any of the other ingredients
of this medicine.

If your liver function is
severely impaired.

LOSACAR
is
not
recommended
in
early
pregnancy,
and
must
not
be
taken if you are more than 3
months
pregnant,
as
it
may
cause serious harm to your baby
if used at that stage.

If you are breast-feeding or
about to start breast-feeding.

Tell your doctor if:

have
had
a
history
of
angiooedema
(swelling
of
the
face, lips, throat, and/or tongue).

If you suffer from excessive
vomiting or diarrhoea leading to

When impaired renal function is present, changes in renal function as
a consequence of inhibiting the renin angiotensin system including
renal failure have been reported in
susceptible individuals; in some patients these changes in renal
function may be reversible upon discontinuation of therapy.
Based on pharmacokinetic data which demonstrate significantly
increased plasma concentrations of losartan in cirrhotic patients,
halving of the dose should be considered for
patients with a history of hepatic impairment.
In patients who are intravascularly volume-depleted (e.g., those
treated with high-dose diuretics), symptomatic hypotension may occur.
These conditions should be corrected
prior to administration of Losartan tablets, or a lower starting dose
should be used.

LOSARTAN POTASSIUM TABLETS USP
Each film coated tablet contains
Losartan potassium USP 50 mg
Angiotension II, a potent vasoconstrictor, is the primary active
hormone of the renin-angiotensin system, and a major determinant of
the pathophysiology of hypertension.
Angiotensin II binds to the AT receptor found in many tissues. (e.g.,
vascular smooth muscle, adrenal gland, kidneys, and the heart) and
elicits several important biological

actions, including vasoconstriction and the release of aldosterone.
Angiotensin II also stimulates smooth muscle cell proliferation.
Losartan is a synthetic, orally active compound which binds
selectively to the AT receptor. Both losartan and its
pharmacologically active carboxylic acid metabolite (E-3174)

block the actions of angiotensin II, regardless of the source or route
of synthesis.
PHARMACODYNAMIC PROPERTIES
Losartan binds selectively to the AT receptor and does not bind to or
block other hormone receptors or ion channels important in
cardiovascular regulation. Furthermore,
