CALCIUM VITAMIN D 3 STELLA _EFFERVESCENT TABLET _ Calcium carbonate ......................... 2469 mg Calcium gluconolactate.................... 100 mg (equivalent to 1000 mg of calcium) Vitamin D 3 .................................... 0.022 mg (equivalent to 880 IU of vitamin D 3 ) COMPOSITION _Active ingredient: _ _One effervescent tablet contains 2469 mg of calcium carbonate and 100 mg of _ _calcium gluconolactate (equivalent to 1000 mg of total amount of calcium) and _ _0.022 mg of vitamin D_ _3_ _ (equivalent to 880 IU of vitamin D_ _3_ _)._ PHARMACODYNAMICS - _Calcium:_ Corrects an insufficient intake of calcium in the diet. The commonly accepted requirement of calcium in the elderly is 1500 mg/day. - _Vitamin D_ _3_ : Corrects an insufficient intake of vitamin D and increases intestinal absorption of calcium. The optimal amount of vitamin D in the elderly is 500 - 1000 IU/day. - Administration of calcium and vitamin D 3 counteracts the increase of parathyroid hormone (PTH) which is caused by calcium deficiency and which causes increased bone resorption. PHARMACOKINETICS ABSORPTION - Calcium is absorbed from the gastrointestinal (GI) tract by active transport and passive diffusion. Calcium is actively absorbed in the duodenum and proximal jejunum and, to a lesser extent, in the more distal segments of the small intestine. The degree of absorption depends on a number of factors; calcium is never completely absorbed from the intestine. - Vitamin D is easily absorbed in the small intestine. DISTRIBUTION AND METABOLISM - 99% of the calcium in the body is concentrated in the hard structure of bones and teeth. The remaining 1% is present in the intra- and extracellular fluids. About 50% of the total blood-calcium content is in the physiologically active ionised form with approximately 10% being complexed to citrate, phosphate or other anions, the remaining 40% being bound to proteins, principally albumin. - Vitamin D and its metabolites circulate in the blood bound to a specific globulin.
