Xylazine [2(2 ,6·d imethylph enylam ino)·4 H·5 , 6·dlhydro·l .
3· thiazine hydrochloride]
is a sedat ive with varia ble
analgesic and muscle relaxan t properties. Its sedative effect
is several
times greater in rumina nts than in other
domestic species.
and it is thought to exert
its
majo r effec t on presynaptic 2 ·adrenoceplors.
Xylaz ine acts centrally to cause muscle
reiaxanon .
The degree 01analgesia
tou
owing the use 01Romazine 20 is variable and dose-related. The
concomitant use of
an appr op riate anaesthetic agenf is recommended lor painful
procedures. Following intramuscular injection, the
onset of sedat ion may be expe cted within 10 min utes . with a
duration of several
hours . Intravenous administration
results in a mo re rapid onse t but a snorter duration of effect. The
max imum analgesi c ettect lasts up to 40 minutes.
Most patients are able to stand or mainta in sternal
recumbency during recovery .
The degree 01sedat ion is dependent on the dose given (see Directions
lor
Use) .
In most
species
there is a trans ient bradycardia. hypotension and reduced respiratory
rate lollowing adrninistra-
tion.

ACUTE: SWALLOWED: Harmful by ingestion. May result in nausea, vomiting and
diarrhoea. EYE: Mild eye irritant. SKIN: Mild skin irritant. INHALED: Would not normally present an inhalation hazard. INJECTED: Effects will vary in severity according to the quantity
involved,
from localised site reaction (pain, redness, swelling) to a more
acute systemic reaction, possibly including tiredness, faintness,
blurred vision, drowsiness, bradycardia, apnoea.
